Peer Support Specialists

As noted by *SAMHSA:

Peer support services are delivered by individuals who have common life experiences with the people they are serving. People with mental and/or substance use disorders have a unique capacity to help each other based on a shared affiliation and a deep understanding of this experience. In self-help and mutual support, people offer this support, strength, and hope to their peers, which allows for personal growth, wellness promotion, and recovery.

Anyone can recover and/or manage their conditions successfully.

Recovery as a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.

Hope, the belief that these challenges and conditions can be overcome, is the foundation of recovery.

The process of recovery is highly personal and occurs via many pathways.

Because setbacks are a natural part of life, resilience becomes a key component of recovery. Resilience refers to an individual’s ability to cope with adversity and adapt to challenges or change.

The process of recovery is supported through relationships and social networks.
